Norman Teeling, Graham Knuttel, Markey Robinson,T.C Murphy, Alex McKenna, John Skelton,
OHN SKELTON (1925 Armagh- 2009 Dublin) started his professional career in London, where he came under influence of Euston Road School in the late 1940s.

In 1946 he married Caroline, settling four years later in Dublin. He worked initially in advertising as Art Director and illustrator of books, most of them educational. After 1975 he worked full-time as a painter. He had numerous one man shows in Dublin; two in Belfast, one in Los Angeles and one in the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut.

Up to the late 1980s, John was frequent exhibitor in group shows, particularly the annual Royal Hibernian Academy and the Watercolour Society shows in Dublin. In recent years, however, his work was in such demand that he contributed to these less often. During the 1970s and earlier 1980s he earned a reputation as a gifted teacher and lecturer in the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

  • Graham Knuttel was born in Dublin in 1954. Initially renowned for his large wooden mechanical animated sculptures, Knuttel's figurative paintings are now acclaimed internationally. He paints into an urban landscape to which he himself belongs, favouring dark and dangerous scenes, which reflect the fears, doubts and hopes he feels himself. It is on canvas that Knuttel fights his battles, the tensions and moods brilliantly portrayed on the faces of his subjects, his wicked sense of humour evident throughout. Knuttel returns constantly to still life in his work, inspired by its potential for simplicity and bringing him back to his early studies of Cezanne and Picasso.

  • Norman Teeling Teeling is one of Ireland’s leading impressionist painters. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1944, Teeling graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1975 with a degree in Fine Art. After graduating, he began a successful career as a teacher, stage set designer ,sign writer and cartoonist for two national papers ,The Irish Press and Sunday World. He also worked in The Animation Film Industry as a background artist and animator in Ireland, Norway, and the USA. While Teeling’s paintings include many local scenes of the coastal region of North Dublin, his outlook and insight have been sharpened by his travel abroad, particularly in the US, France and Norway. A true mark of the artist’s versatility and an undoubted acknowledgement of his talent are the ten paintings that were commissioned for the General Post Office in Dublin. The work depicts the events surrounding the ‘1916 Rising’ and remains on permanent display.

  • Linda Graham trained in fine art in The Hague, Netherlands and Art and Design in Kilmainham, Dublin in the 1970’s. Graham paints mostly in oil, appreciating the jewel-like translucency the medium imparts to the colours, and has made major stained glass windows that translate this quality to the traditional discipline in it’s purist form. She also studied Art Therapy, working in community arts and with various marginalised groups.

  • Markey, now well established as one of Ireland's leading names in art, had brushes with careers of all kinds, but it was to art that Markey dedicated nearly all of his life. He ultimately has become one of the most recognisable and consistently saleable painters in Ireland. Although he originally lived and worked in Belfast, Markey frequently travelled the world in search of the images that would become iconic in his paintings. His trips to Spain and Africa provided stunning, simplistic images of buildings and life from around the world, but it was Ireland that captured Markey's imagination most of all. His paintings depict the countryside with flat, muted colour and in his almost abstract, almost geometrical compositions, he seems to capture the easy relationship between beauty and sadness.

  • David Marcus Robinson, known as Markey Robinson (February 7, 1918 – January 28, 1999 (aged 80)), was an Irish painter and sculptor with a primitive representational style.[1] His main passion was painting, but he also produced sculptures and designed some stained glass panels.

    Musical Clown By Markey Robinson

Robinson was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the son of a house painter.[2] He trained at the Belfast College of Art.[1] He took part in boxing matches, under the name “Boyo Marko”, and later worked as a merchant seaman.[1] Robinson’s first exhibitions were in Belfast during World War II. He became better known through over 20 exhibitions of his work at the Oriel Gallery in Dublin, where he used the upstairs framing room as his studio. As well as a steady stream of sales of individual pictures. The Royal Hibernian Academy was another prominent venue for exhibition of his work. He also had a long record of one-man-shows in other venues both in Ireland and elsewhere.

Markey’s designs for stained glass can be seen over the entrance to the Oriel Gallery and also in the window designed by him in the late 1970s.

More than 400 Markey Robinson works can be seen in the online archive catalogues of Whytes Irish Art Auctions

His paintings cover a wide range of subjects, but there are certain recurring features. These may appear separately or in combination.

    • Village scenes of white cottages in which the white gable end of the cottage is distinctive. Frequently, there are no windows visible in these cottages.
    • Women wearing dark shawls – no facial features are visible
    • Sailboats, normally with dark brown sails, or sometimes white sails
    • Jugs feature prominently in his still life paintings
    • Circus clowns

He painted the inhabited countryside with flat muted colour in almost abstract, almost geometrical compositions.

Robinson died in Belfast, aged 80.

In May 2008, the Taoiseach (the Irish Prime Minister), Brian Cowen TD, officially opened a restropective exhibition of Robinson’s work at the Oriel Gallery. Entitled Markey at the Oriel the exhibition featured paintings and sculpture from the 1950s onwards. A 160-page catalogue on the artist by Paul O’Kelly accompanied the exhibition.

In recent years his works have become popular, and widely faked, as his style is relatively easy to copy. His earlier works are more difficult to fake as they are quite detailed. Robinson was very resourceful in sourcing painting materials and many of his works are on bits of plywood or cardboard discarded by shopkeepers. Many of his best works were painted around the 1960s. Towards the end of his life Robinson painted many of the same paintings again and again as he was guaranteed a good price from them. It is estimated that he produced over 10,000 works of art. He never kept any of his paintings. His daughter Annie is also a popular artist and her works are often inspired by Markey.

  • Tom Byrne was born in Dublin in 1962. He studied at Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design, where he trained in the Bauhaus tradition, a revolutionary 20th century school of artistic training which integrated craftsmanship, art and technology. Byrne describes, "religion, politics and celebrity all play equally important roles in my work". His strong interest in current affairs along with his punk mentality merges to create an artist who is in tune with the world around him. Informed by spirituality and popular culture alike, the artist thinks of himself as a contemporary artist first and foremost, selecting beauty from everyday experience and channelling it into painterly abstractions.
